Marital status is a person’s formal position as defined by the Dutch civil code. There is a distinction between marriage and civil union.

Purpose

The marital status is recorded for administrative purposes.

Evidence Base

Though there is no specific international code for a “civil union” (Civil union has the broader definition of “living together”), this definition is limited in the Netherlands because the fact that people live together is separate from their marital status.
